The Client
Fluid Branding is a globally recognised merchandising website. Specialising in high-quality promotional merchandise, they serve clients across the UK, Ireland, and Europe.

The Brief
Fluid Branding had already implemented Hyvä with the goal of delivering lightning-fast performance and excellent Core Web Vitals scores. However, despite the upgrade, the site wasn’t reaching its full speed potential, with sluggish load times.
The challenge was to identify and remove the bottlenecks from server inefficiencies to unused code so that the site could fully leverage Hyvä’s capabilities, improve user experience, and boost engagement.
The Solution
An investigation was in order. We reviewed the client’s site and identified several optimisations to improve their site. Our solution focused on three core aspects:
Upgrading to the latest Hyvä release to leverage performance enhancements and security updates.
Reducing server load and improving query efficiency
Removing redundant JavaScript and CSS, and optimising script execution to reduce resource usage.
Based on experience, we knew these fixes would improve site speed, enhance user experience, and boost Core Web Vitals scores.
The Work
We prioritised rolling out these improvements in phases so we could monitor and fine-tune the enhancements for optimal performance.

Upgrading the Hyvä Theme
We installed the latest Hyvä version, ensuring stability, security, and compatibility with ongoing developments.
Fine-tuning JavaScript Execution
We used the x-defer attribute and optimised Alpine.js components to load only when users interacted with elements like the header, navigation, and footer.
Enabling Speculation Rules
We configured the system to pre-render static pages when users hovered over or clicked links, significantly reducing load times.
Refining Database Queries
By analysing and optimising queries, we reduced server load and improved response times.
Eliminating Unused Code
We identified and removed redundant JavaScript and CSS, improving rendering efficiency and reducing page weight.
The Results
Following these optimisations, Fluid Branding’s site experienced significant performance improvements:
Reduced First Contentful Paint (FCP) by -216% on desktop and -52% on mobile
Reduced Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) by -36% on desktop and -65% on mobile
Reduced Speed Index by -6% on desktop and -15% on mobile
Improved Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) from 13 to 0 across both desktop and mobile
