At Meet Magento NYC 2024, Adobe emphasized community collaboration in shaping Magento Open Source, highlighting the relationship of its open-source and proprietary ecosystems. While there is an open dialogue over the positioning of Magento Open Source, the session reaffirmed the community’s vital role in driving the platform forward.

The key takeaways from this session?

  1. Community-Led Prioritisation: Adobe invited the community to actively participate in shaping the future of Magento Open Source, ensuring the codebase stays agile and relevant. This wasn’t just lip service; it was a clear call to action.
  2. “Two Ecosystems – One Community”: Using an overlapping red (Adobe) and orange (Magento) visual to drive home the point, Adobe emphasized that its proprietary and open-source ecosystems are interdependent. It was a symbolic and overdue recognition of the community’s vital role in Adobe’s commerce strategy.

While the talk was generally well-received, there was one point of contention: Adobe’s positioning of Open Source as a solution for “small/less sophisticated businesses.” The reality, as many of us know, is that Magento Open Source powers some of the most complex and innovative eCommerce businesses in the world. That said, the acknowledgment from Adobe was a step in the right direction, and I’m grateful to Ritesh Somani for shining a spotlight on Open Source.

Technical Updates & Community Engagement

We also heard from Parul Sinha (Adobe), who shared some important updates about deployment processes and community voting. For a non-developer like myself, it was encouraging to see Adobe’s commitment to engaging with the community on a technical level. It’s clear that Adobe is paying attention, and they want to give the community a voice in shaping the future.

A Call to Action from the Magento Association

Another key highlight was the update from Mathias Schreiber (Magento Association). Mathias delivered a candid call to action for the Magento community. His message was clear: while Adobe fully supports the Magento Association, it’s up to us as a community to step up, take ownership, and drive the platform forward.

I had the chance to chat with Matthias at length during the event, and it’s obvious that the Magento Association is in start-up mode—scrappy and hungry. Funding is tight, and we’ll need to continue pushing for both financial support and volunteer contributions. If there was ever a time to get involved and give back, this is it! We can’t afford to rest on our laurels.

Wrapping Up the Opening Remarks

Closing out the session was Eric Erway , a familiar and friendly face who brought an undeniable sense of positivity and enthusiasm to the stage. Eric’s passion for the Magento ecosystem, and the way it has shaped not only his career but also many others’, was a heartfelt reminder of why we continue to invest time, energy, and resources into this community.

The Meet Magento NYC Opening Remarks were a mix of nostalgia, optimism, and a clear vision for the future. Whether you were a first-timer or a long-time veteran, the message was clear: this community is alive, it’s growing, and we all have a role to play in its evolution.
